We may be based in Norfolk but we still recognise good pottery, even if it is from our neighbours in Suffolk. The picturesque rural area of Wattisfield, near the Suffolk/Norfolk border, has been a continuous centre of pottery making since the special properties of the local clay were first discovered. Archaeologists have found fragments from the Neolithic Period, Iron Age, Roman occupation and mediaeval times in the vicinity. The terracotta (literally ‘baked earth’) tradition they follow has origins which are so ancient as to be obscure, but certainly stretches back more than 4,000 years. Terracotta is characterised by a timeless colour and texture, even though manufacturing methods and designs have naturally evolved over the years.
